What is an SR-22 or FR-44?
If you haven’t heard those terms before, that’s a good thing. Most states require additional insurance coverage when you’ve violated certain laws centered around (primarily) your operation of a motor vehicle. Typically, an SR-22 is required when you’ve caused a significant accident that results in bodily injuries to another person and you were without insurance entirely, or just carried the minimum the state allows. Moving forward, the state will up the minimum amount of insurance you are required to carry for a certain period of time.
An FR-44 is similar, but designated specifically for cases involving DUI’s or Impaired Driving infractions. While the concept is the same, the minimum limits you are required to carry are 10X higher than the SR22 limits. Combine that with your original ticket and you can see why the financial aspect or the insurance can be prohibitive.
Anytime that you are dealing with these penalties, it is imperative that you keep good records of all your documents and conversations with the DMV and court officials. Ultimately, it is your responsibility to purchase the correct insurance you need. The good news is that we are here to help and most carriers that offer SR-22/FR-44 insurance will now allow monthly pay plans as well.
